We are not separate selves, we are waves in the ocean of existence. In this course we approach this fundamental insight from the perspectives of quantum physics and of ancient wisdom traditions.

We  begin by tracing the evolution of our understanding of mind and matter from ancient times to the present, culminating in the revolutionary findings of quantum physics.

In this course:

  • Explore the implications of those findings for life and consciousness.
  • Explore what does it mean to be in a body, to be embodied? What is consciousness?
  • Examine the role of the observer in quantum physics and find that it is indeed central, although not in the way it is usually assumed.
  • Compare the quantum world view with that of ancient Daoists and find that the notion (or no-notion!) of Dao is as close as one can get to expressing the oneness of matter and mind, consciousness and world.
  • Look at ways of manifesting Dao in everyday life, acting from a place of non-doing, following the water way.

Shantena Augusto Sabbadini

Shantena Augusto Sabbadini worked as a theoretical physicist at the University of Milan and at the University of California. In Milan he researched the foundations of quantum physics, focusing on the description of the quantum process of observation, a problem that keeps fascinating him up to the present. In California he contributed to the first identification of a black hole.

In the 1990’s he was a scientific consultant for the Eranos Foundation, an East-West research center founded under the guidance of C.G. Jung in the 1930’s. In that context he studied Chinese classics under the guidance of the Dutch sinologist Rudolf Ritsema and produced various translations and commentaries, including the Yijing and the Daodejing. Since 2002 he has been associate director of the Pari Center for New Learning, an alternative educational institution located in the small medieval village of Pari in Tuscany, Italy. He teaches short courses at the Schumacher College and leads workshops on Daoism, quantum physics and the Yijing as a tool for introspection.
